This limestone, with its characteristic finely porous structure and warm beige, cream and nut-brown tones, evokes Tuscan country houses and Roman baths – after all, the Romans themselves built with travertine. Unlike uniform porcelain tiles, travertine lives from its natural banding: no two tiles are alike, and that is precisely its charm.

Buying travertine tiles – warmth and character for every room

Travertine is a porous limestone whose natural cavities give it its unmistakable face. With filled tiles, the pores are closed at the factory – the surface is smooth and easy to clean. Unfilled travertine looks even more natural; the pores are usually closed during grouting or deliberately left open. Which variant is right depends on the area of use and your taste – ideally compare both on a sample.

Where to use it: bathroom, living areas and floors

Travertine is especially popular in bathrooms: the matt, slightly textured surface is naturally slip-resistant and feels pleasant barefoot. In living and dining areas a travertine floor creates a warm, calm atmosphere and suits country-house interiors as well as modern, reduced concepts. Travertine conducts heat very well, making it ideal for underfloor heating. It also cuts a fine figure as wall cladding, in hallways or on stairs.

Finishes: tumbled, honed, brushed

Tumbled travertine has rounded edges and an antique look – perfect for a rustic, Mediterranean style. Honed tiles appear calmer and more modern, while brushed surfaces with their velvety feel sit in between. Combined with the available formats – from classic small sizes to large formats and the popular Roman pattern – very different room designs can be achieved.

Caring for travertine tiles

Travertine is sealed after installation and is uncomplicated from then on: regular mopping with clean water or a pH-neutral stone cleaner is sufficient. Acidic cleaners should be avoided. Minor signs of use can even be removed by re-honing – something no ceramic tile can offer.

Natural stone is one of the best coverings for underfloor heating: travertine conducts heat quickly and stores it for a long time – the heating works more efficiently than under many other floor coverings.

How do I care for travertine tiles?

Mop regularly with clean water or a pH-neutral natural stone cleaner and avoid acidic products (vinegar, citrus). Sealing after installation protects against stains and makes routine cleaning much easier.
